Hello curious dancer!

After over 10 years of travelling to teach dance all over Europe and beyond, I'm very excited to be offering dance workshops in my hometown of Heidelberg! I'm looking forward to sharing my love and excitement for these beautiful Black American dances with both new and more experienced dancers.

Extra info:

The first track is a solo dance track.

The blues tracks are both for partnered dancing.

You do however not need a partner to sign up (there are enough dancers who are happy to dance in either role to balance out the class), and we'll continuously switch dance partners during class anyway. You are also very welcome to dance only solo even in the partnered tracks! Partnering is never mandatory, and just solo jamming is totally fine!

Class descriptions:

Solo Jazz Track: Shim Sham & More

11:00-13:00

This Solo Jazz track is both for...

...those who already know the Shim Sham,

and those who do not yet!

The Shim Sham was and is originally a tap line dance but through Frankie Manning's involvement, it also became a group line dance for lindy hoppers and is today being danced all over the world at swing dance parties.

If you do know the Shim Sham, in this track you'll work on fine-tuning the many Solo Jazz movements the line dance consists of, and making sure that you can dance the Shim Sham both with confidence and lots of groove in your body!

If you do not know the Shim Sham yet, you'll learn a whole bag of classic Solo Jazz grooves/steps like the Tacky Annie, the T.O.B.A. break, the Boogie Forward and the Shorty George (among others) and also get an idea of how to dance them all together with everyone else!

Here's Frankie Manning with Erin Stevens, doing the Shim Sham for an instructional video many moons ago:

For those who do not know how it looks in the wild, this is the Shim Sham done at a Lindy Hop Festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cUPYkJQ29s

Blues Track A: Relaxed Shuffle Blues

14:30-16:00

This track is for everyone who likes classic, relaxed, mid-tempo shuffle blues and wants to learn how to express the music with their body movement. We'll work on finding and keeping a consistent groove in the body, discover or fine-tune different movements from fishtails to sailor shuffles, and learn how to dance them both solo and together with a partner.

Blues Track B: Slow Blues & Blues Ballads

16:15-17:45

Whether it is Classic Slow Blues (or "un slow" as the French like to call it) or the Blues Ballads of the great big blues singers, or even bluesy folk songs where lyrics and melody take the lead, it's not just the underlying triplet rhythm of the music that they all have in common!

In this class, we'll tackle rhythm, fluidity and flow both in ourselves but also in connection with our dance partners, so that we can slow groove and travel across the dance floor with ease!
